The Igniter That Glows and Still Fails

A gas oven does not simply light gas when the thermostat calls for heat. It runs a safety sequence. Power goes to a hot surface igniter, the igniter heats up, and the current it draws while heating is what holds the gas safety valve open. Only when that current is high enough does gas flow and light. The design exists so that a failed igniter cannot fill your kitchen with unlit gas.

The consequence is the most misread symptom in appliance repair. Igniters weaken with age: they still glow, often brilliantly, but they draw less current than they did when new. Below the threshold the valve stays shut. So you have an oven with a bright orange glow bar and no flame, and a perfectly logical owner concluding that the igniter must be fine because they can see it working.

The mistake that costs twice: judging an igniter by eye. Glow proves the element is not open — it proves nothing about current draw. The only honest test is a meter in series with the igniter while it heats, and that measurement is why an oven diagnostic exists at all. Replacing a valve because “the igniter glows” is the classic way to spend more and fix nothing.

The other tell is timing. A healthy gas oven lights within roughly 30 to 60 seconds of the igniter starting to glow. When that stretches to two or three minutes, then to only sometimes, the igniter is on its way out and the oven will fail completely within weeks. An oven that takes several minutes to light is not a quirk to work around — it is a part in its final stage, and unlit gas cycling into a hot cavity is not something to live with. Broil Works, Bake Does Not

There is a third possibility worth ruling out first because it is free: the double breaker. An electric oven runs on two 120V legs. Lose one and you get a live display, a working clock, sometimes a working cooktop on a range, and no heat at all. Switching the breaker fully off and back on takes ten seconds and occasionally ends the whole story.

Self-Clean, the Cycle That Kills Ovens

Self-clean works by heating the cavity to around 900°F to burn residue into ash. It does that job well. It also puts every component in and around the cavity through the hottest hours of its life, and a meaningful share of the dead ovens we see arrive the day after a self-clean cycle.

Two things fail. Whirlpool fits a thermal fuse designed to open if the cavity exceeds safe limits, and a self-clean cycle runs close enough to those limits that an aging fuse gives up. When it opens, the oven goes completely dead. The other casualty is the control board, which sits behind the fascia in air that gets far hotter during self-clean than during any cooking.

None of that means never use it. It means using it deliberately: not the night before a holiday when you need the oven, not with the racks left in, and not as a monthly routine on an oven over ten years old. Wiping spills while the cavity is still warm after cooking removes most of what self-clean exists for, and it costs nothing. What You Can Check in Fifteen Minutes

Rule out the controls. Check for a control lock symbol, a delayed start still programmed, or Sabbath mode left on after a holiday. Each of these produces an oven that looks alive and refuses to heat, and each is cleared from the panel.
Switch the double breaker fully off and back on. An oven on one leg of its 240V supply has a working display and no heat. This is free and it is worth doing before anything else on an electric model.
Run broil for two minutes on an electric oven. Broil working while bake does nothing points at the bake element or its relay, and it is the single most informative free test available.
Look along the bake element with a torch. A break, blister or bright pit is a diagnosis you can see. Do not touch it, and do not run the oven with a visibly damaged element.
Time the ignition on a gas oven. Set 350°F and watch the glow bar at the back of the cavity floor. Lighting within 30 to 60 seconds is normal. Two minutes or more, or a glow with no flame at all, is a failing igniter.
Check the gas supply. If the cooktop burners light, gas is reaching the appliance and the oven side is at fault. If nothing lights anywhere, check the shut-off valve behind or below the range, and any work done in the house recently.
Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack. If it heats but bakes badly, get a number before assuming a fault. Anything within about 25°F of the setting is normal variation; 50°F or more out points at the sensor or calibration.

If the breaker is fine, the controls are clear and the oven still will not heat, the fault is in the igniter circuit, the element, the sensor or the board. What a Technician Actually Checks

The order matters, because each test rules out a branch of causes instead of replacing parts and hoping.

Supply voltage on both legs first. Half a supply produces symptoms that imitate almost every internal fault, and no meaningful test can be done until it is ruled out.
Igniter current measured in series on gas models. Not observed, measured. This is the test that separates a weak igniter from a failed gas valve, and getting it wrong is the difference between $350 and a far larger bill.
Gas valve function, only once the igniter measures good. A valve is ruled in when correct current fails to open it, never before.

Heats, But Bakes Badly

An oven that produces heat but ruins food is a different fault from one that stays cold, and it is worth separating because the fix is often cheap. Start with a thermometer on the middle rack and a 350°F setting. Give it twenty minutes to stabilise rather than reading it at the moment the preheat beep sounds.

Within about 25°F of the setting is normal. Ovens cycle around their target rather than holding it flat, and every oven overshoots and undershoots. Consistently 50°F or more out is a real fault, and the two candidates are a temperature sensor that has drifted and a calibration setting that has been knocked. Most Whirlpool controls allow the owner to offset the calibration by a small amount, and if the oven is uniformly low across every setting, that offset is worth trying before any part.

Uneven baking is a third case again. One side browning faster, or the top burning while the bottom stays pale, usually points at the convection fan on models that have one, or at a door seal letting heat out on one side. Why the Same Fault Comes Back

Igniters are the most common repeat we see, and usually for a sound reason rather than a bad one: they are consumable. A hot surface igniter runs at extreme temperature every time the oven cycles, and it degrades. On a heavily used oven, six to eight years is a normal service life, and a second igniter a decade after the first is not a failed repair.

What is avoidable is the repeat caused by treating a symptom. An oven with a drifting temperature sensor cycles its heat far more often than it should, because the control keeps chasing a target it is being told it has not reached. That extra cycling wears the igniter or the element faster. Replace the igniter without checking the sensor and the new one lives a shorter life than it should — the fault that shortened it is still in place.

The third pattern is self-clean, and it is the most preventable. An oven that has had its thermal fuse or control board replaced after a self-clean cycle will do the same thing again if the cycle is run on the same schedule. On an older appliance the honest advice is to stop using self-clean altogether and wipe the cavity while it is warm instead. Nobody enjoys hearing that about a feature they paid for, but it is cheaper than a $469 board.

How Long Preheat Should Take

A Whirlpool oven reaching 350°F takes roughly 12 to 15 minutes from cold, and a little longer for higher settings or a large cavity.
