The Igniter, and Why Looking at It Tells You Nothing
This is worth reading properly if your gas oven has stopped lighting, because it will explain something that otherwise makes no sense.
On a gas oven, the igniter does two jobs at once. It provides the heat that lights the gas, and it acts as the electrical gatekeeper for the safety valve.
The valve is wired in series with the igniter, and it is designed to open only when the current flowing through that igniter is high enough — which happens only when the igniter has reached the temperature needed to light gas reliably. The whole arrangement exists so that a weak igniter can never release unburnt gas into your kitchen.
The consequence is counterintuitive: an igniter ages by drawing less current, not by going dark. As it weakens it still glows. It glows orange, it glows convincingly, it looks exactly like a healthy one to the eye. But it no longer draws enough current to satisfy the valve, so the valve never opens and no gas ever arrives.
You watch a glowing igniter in a cold oven and conclude the gas valve must be broken. It is not. The valve is doing precisely what it was designed to do.
Which means a glowing igniter is not evidence of a working igniter, and this fault cannot be diagnosed by looking. It has to be metered: the current drawn while the igniter is hot is measured against the specification for that machine, and that measurement is the difference between replacing the right part once and replacing the wrong part twice.
It is also why we do not accept the customer report of the igniter glowing as ruling it out.
Two useful signatures while you wait. If the oven lights eventually but takes far longer than it used to — several minutes of glow before it catches — that is an igniter on the way out, not a quirk, and it will fail completely. And if it lights when cold but not when hot, or only some of the time, that is the same fault at an earlier stage.

The cooktop is a separate story with a separate part. Gas burners are lit by a spark electrode fed from a spark module at $347 in Florida — the source of the clicking. A large share of oven calls are about temperature rather than about a failure, so it is worth setting out what an oven genuinely does before deciding yours is broken.
An oven does not hold a temperature. It cycles around one. The thermostat or sensor lets it overshoot the set point, then the heat cuts, then it falls below and the heat returns.
A swing of twenty-five to thirty degrees either side of the set point is ordinary behaviour on a domestic oven in good order, not a defect, and an oven thermometer will show you that swing happening if you watch it for twenty minutes.
So the useful test is not whether the number moves. It is whether the average is wrong. Put an oven thermometer on the middle shelf, set the oven to 350 degrees, wait a full twenty minutes after it says it has reached temperature, then read it several times over the next ten minutes.
If the readings hover around 350 while moving up and down, the oven is fine and the problem is elsewhere — often the door seal, the rack position, or a pan reflecting or absorbing heat differently from the one used before. If the readings centre on 310 or 390, something genuinely needs attention.
Then the order of suspects is: the door seal and hinges, because a leaking box cannot hold an average; the temperature sensor at $300 in Florida, which drifts as it ages and quietly reports the wrong number; and the thermostat at $404 on machines that have one.

Second, on gas, the igniter is metered rather than observed. The current it draws while hot is measured against specification, because a weak igniter glows exactly like a healthy one and no amount of looking will separate them. This is the step that decides whether the right part is fitted once or the wrong part twice.
Third, on electric, the elements are inspected and tested. Often the failure is visible — a blister, a split, an arc mark — and where it is not, it is a straightforward measurement.

- Trip the breaker for five full minutes. Not a cancel button and not the clock — the breaker. A board holding a bad state after a grid disturbance behaves exactly like a failed $443 board and clears on a genuine cold start.
- Look at the element, if you have one. On an electric oven, a bake or broil element that has failed is frequently visible: a blister, a bright spot, a split, or an arc mark on the porcelain beneath. Look when you book — it may answer the question.
- Time how long a gas oven glows before it lights. If it has gone from under a minute to several minutes, the igniter is failing even though it looks perfectly normal, and it will stop entirely soon.
