Why GE Dishwashers Stop Draining

A dishwasher has to push water uphill to get rid of it. The pump sits at the bottom of the tub, the hose rises to a loop under the counter, and from there gravity takes the water into the sink drain or the garbage disposal. Every part of that route is narrow, and all of it is downstream of whatever came off your plates.

Where GE differs from most of its competition is what happens to that food before it reaches the pump. A large part of the GE range grinds it. Instead of collecting soil in a filter you take out and wash, these machines run it through a hard food disposer — a small stainless blade that chops debris fine enough to pass down the drain with the water. What You Can Check in Fifteen Minutes

Bail out the standing water first. Scoop it into a bowl with a cup and soak up the last of it with towels. Nothing below this can be inspected through four inches of grey water, and everything is easier in a dry tub.
Listen to what the machine does at the drain phase. Run the shortest rinse and stand next to it. A motor that runs steadily without the water level moving behaves differently from total silence, and that distinction decides whether the fault is a blockage or an electrical failure.
Look for glass in the tub floor. Take out the lower rack and go over the sump area and the tub floor carefully with a torch. If anything glass has broken in this machine in the last few months, assume shards reached the disposer. Do not put your fingers into the sump opening — use a torch and look.
Check the disposal plug if any plumbing was done. Find where the dishwasher hose joins the garbage disposal. If the disposal was fitted or replaced at any point before the problem began, that moulded plug is the first suspect and the cheapest fix on this page.
Run the sink and the disposal on their own. Fill the sink and watch it drain. If the sink itself is slow, the dishwasher is pumping into a restriction and is not the fault. Run the disposal for twenty seconds to clear whatever is sitting in it.
Check the drain hose behind the machine. If you can pull the dishwasher forward, look for a kink or a crushed section, and confirm the hose rises to a loop above the tub before dropping. A hose lying flat along the cabinet floor is a fault in itself.
Cut the power for a minute, then run a rinse. Switch off at the breaker, restore it, and run the shortest cycle. Some drain faults are the control having latched an error rather than a mechanical problem, and a full power cycle is the only way to clear that state.

If the sink drains freely, the hose is properly looped, no plumbing was done recently and the tub still holds water, the remaining causes are all inside the machine: a jammed disposer, a blocked or failed pump, a drain solenoid on an older model, or the control. Those need the lower panel off and a meter, and they are four outcomes at four different prices.

What a Technician Actually Checks

Each step below eliminates a branch of causes, which is why the order matters more than the speed.
