Why Whirlpool Dishwashers Stop Draining

A dishwasher drains by pushing water uphill. The pump sits at the bottom of the tub, the drain hose rises to a loop under the counter, and from there the water falls into the sink drain or the garbage disposal. Every part of that path is small in diameter, and every one of them is downstream of whatever came off your plates.

That geometry explains why most drainage faults are not mechanical failures. The pump on a Whirlpool is perfectly capable of moving a tub of water, but it cannot move it through a filter matted with rice and coffee grounds, or through a hose that has been crushed behind the machine when it was pushed back into its cabinet. The pump is doing its job, and the water still sits there.

The high loop is the part almost nobody knows about. The drain hose has to rise above the level of the tub before it drops to the sink drain, because that loop is what stops dirty sink water siphoning back into the dishwasher. The mistake that costs you twice: replacing the drain pump before checking the filter, the hose routing and the disposal plug. A new pump pushes water into exactly the same blockage the old one could not clear, and the tub still has water in it when the cycle ends. Worse, the debris that stopped the first pump goes straight into the new one. Clear the path first, then decide whether the pump was ever the problem.

The disposal plug deserves its own warning because it produces a dishwasher that has never drained since the day a plumber left. A new garbage disposal ships with the dishwasher inlet blanked off by a moulded plastic plug, and that plug has to be knocked out before the dishwasher hose is connected. Miss it and the dishwasher pumps against a sealed wall. It is a two-minute fix with a screwdriver and a hammer, and we still get called out for it.

What You Can Check in Fifteen Minutes

Bail the water out first. Scoop the standing water into a bowl with a cup, then soak up the last of it with towels. You cannot inspect anything through four inches of grey water, and everything below is easier with a dry tub.
Pull and clean the filter. On most current Whirlpool models the cylindrical filter twists out of the tub floor by hand, and there is a flat coarse screen underneath it. Rinse both under a hot tap, use an old toothbrush on the mesh, and look into the sump underneath for glass, olive stones and bits of label.
Check the disposal plug if anything was recently fitted. Look at where the dishwasher hose joins the disposal. If the disposal was installed or replaced any time before the problem started, the moulded plug behind that inlet is the first suspect and the cheapest fix on this page.
Run the sink and the disposal on their own. Fill the sink and let it drain while watching. If the sink itself is slow, the dishwasher is not the fault — it is trying to push water into a blocked drain. Run the disposal for twenty seconds to clear anything sitting in it.
Look at the drain hose behind the machine. Pull the dishwasher forward carefully if you can, and check the hose for a kink or a crushed section, and confirm it rises to a loop above the tub before dropping to the sink. A hose lying flat across the floor of the cabinet is a fault in itself.
Reset the machine and run a rinse. Switch the power off at the breaker for a minute, restore it, then run the shortest rinse cycle with the door closed and listen at the drain stage. A pump that hums for a few seconds and stops behaves differently from one that never starts, and that difference matters to whoever comes out.
Note any error code exactly. If the panel flashes a code or a light pattern, photograph it. Whirlpool reports drain faults distinctly from heating and fill faults, and the code narrows the visit down before the panel comes off.

If the filter is clean, the sink drains freely, the hose is properly looped and the tub still holds water, the fault is in the pump or in the control that drives it. The drain path proved clear, end to end, first. Filter, sump, hose and the connection at the sink or disposal. No pump is condemned while the path it pumps into is unverified — that is the single most common cause of a repeat visit on this fault.
Voltage at the drain pump during the drain stage. Power present and no movement means the pump has failed. No power means the fault is upstream, in the board or the wiring, and the pump is innocent.
Impeller turned by hand with the power off. A pump that hums without moving water is usually jammed rather than dead, and glass fragments are the usual culprit. This distinguishes a clean-out from a replacement.
Check valve at the pump outlet. A flap that has stuck open lets drained water fall straight back into the tub, which mimics a pump that will not drain but leaves the pump testing perfectly.
Hose routing and the high loop verified, not assumed. The loop has to be above the tub level and secured. This is also where an installation-related fault gets identified as such, which changes what needs doing.
Air gap or sink connection inspected. Where the plumbing uses an air gap fitting on the countertop, that fitting blocks with debris and stops the drain dead while everything inside the dishwasher tests good.
Float and level sensing checked. If the machine believes the tub is already empty or already full, it will not run the drain phase properly, and nothing mechanical is wrong at all.
Control board last. It is the least likely cause and among the more expensive parts, so it is ruled in only when the pump, the wiring and the sensing have all tested correct.

The Filter Design That Changed Everything

Whirlpool, like most of the industry, moved away from hard food disposers built into the dishwasher to a manual filter you clean yourself. That change made dishwashers dramatically quieter and cut their water use, and it moved one maintenance task from the machine to the owner. Nobody was told.

The consequence shows up as a drainage complaint. An older dishwasher with a grinder chewed up whatever came off the plates and pushed it down the drain. How often depends entirely on how you load. If plates go in scraped clean, every few months is enough. Why the Same Fault Comes Back

Repeat drainage complaints are almost never a bad part. They are the same debris load, unaddressed.

A pump gets replaced, the machine drains beautifully for a month, then the water comes back and the owner concludes the repair failed. Usually it did not. A small amount of clean water sitting in the sump recess after a cycle is normal on many dishwashers, and it is there deliberately to keep the seals from drying out. What is not normal is water covering the tub floor, water you can see above the filter, or water that is grey and smells. If it covers the bottom of the tub, that is a fault.

The drain phase itself is short. Expect the pump to clear the tub in under a minute of continuous running, with the sound changing distinctly as the water level drops and air enters the pump. A machine that runs its drain pump for two or three minutes and still has water in it is pushing against a restriction, and that is worth acting on before it becomes a standing-water complaint.

Two habits prevent most of what is on this page. Clean the filter monthly if you load dishes with food still on them, and scrape rather than rinse — the machine wants the soil, it just cannot handle whole grains of rice and lemon pips. And run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner every couple of months, which keeps grease from building a film on the sump walls and the check valve.
