Walk In Freezer Repair
A Freezer Is Not a Colder Cooler
The two boxes look alike and share most of their parts, and that is why they get treated as the same equipment. Mechanically the difference is one thing, and it is the thing that breaks: a freezer runs below the point where water freezes, so every gram of moisture that enters becomes ice and stays ice. It never drips away.
That gives a walk in freezer a component a cooler does not need: a defrost cycle, which deliberately warms the evaporator on a timer to melt off accumulated frost, and a heated drain to carry that meltwater out before it refreezes.
Almost everything that goes wrong with a walk in freezer, and is not simply a cooler fault, comes back to that circuit. If defrost stops running, ice builds on the evaporator until air cannot pass through it, and the box warms while the refrigeration system works perfectly. If the drain freezes, the meltwater has nowhere to go and returns to the coil as more ice, producing the same result by a different route.
What It Costs
| Item | Cost | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial service call | $150 | Comes off the repair when you approve it |
| Our walk in freezer repairs | $486, $1,810, $1,880 | Every one we have completed with parts |
| Commercial freezers generally | $518 | 54 jobs, reach ins and self contained boxes |
| Commercial refrigeration generally | $492 | 129 jobs, the wider category |
We are showing the three individual invoices rather than a median, because three jobs cannot support one. The $518 and $492 figures rest on 54 and 129 jobs and are the numbers to plan against. All include parts, labor and the service call.
The service call is $150 rather than the $99 on domestic work, for the same reason as any walk in: the box cannot be pulled out and worked on a bench, and diagnosis covers the box, the condensing unit and the supply.
What We Take and What We Do Not
Self contained boxes. The condensing unit is on top of the box or through a wall panel, and the refrigeration system serves that freezer alone.
Not remote systems or racks. Compressors on the roof or in a plant room feeding several boxes through long refrigerant lines. Different trade, different certification.
Not blast chillers or blast freezers. Different equipment with different controls and duty.
Not the building side. Panel replacement, structural floor work, or the electrical supply upstream of the box.
Reading the Ice
Where frost forms tells you a great deal before anyone opens anything, and it is worth looking before you call.
Ice packed on the evaporator coil, thin elsewhere. Points at the defrost circuit: a heater, a termination sensor, or a control that has stopped calling for the cycle.
Ice on the floor under the evaporator, growing over days. Points at the drain line, most often a heater in that line that has failed, so meltwater refreezes on the way out.
Ice on the ceiling and walls near the door, and on the door frame. Points at the door. Humid air is entering, and the freezer is turning it into frost everywhere it lands.
Frost on the outside of the box or condensation on the panels. Points at the insulation, which is the one problem on this page that is not a repair.
That last one is worth being direct about. Panels that have taken on water no longer insulate, and a box in that condition can never hold temperature regardless of what is fitted to it. It is the genuine end of a walk in freezer, and we would rather identify it than sell you a component.
The Door Does More Work Here
Every walk in depends on its door, and a freezer depends on it more, because the temperature difference across it is roughly twice what a cooler carries and every failure is stored as ice rather than drained away as water.
Freezer doors also have parts a cooler door does not: a heated frame or perimeter heater that stops the door freezing shut, and on many boxes a heated pressure relief port that stops a vacuum forming as the air inside contracts. When the frame heater fails, the door freezes into its opening, and what happens next is usually mechanical damage from someone pulling it open hard.
So a walk in freezer door that has become hard to open is not an inconvenience to work around. It is a fault with a short fuse, and dealing with it costs less than the hinges, gasket and frame that a few forced openings will cost.
Temperature Loss Is Slower Here, and That Is the Trap
A cooler that fails announces itself within hours, because there is little thermal mass and the box climbs quickly to room temperature. A freezer full of frozen product does the opposite: the contents themselves act as a cold store, and a failed box can sit for the better part of a day looking normal from the doorway.
That is why freezer failures are so often discovered the following morning rather than during the shift, and why the loss when they are discovered is larger. By the time the air temperature has climbed enough to be obvious, product at the outside of the box has already been through a partial thaw, and refreezing it does not undo that.
The practical answer is not vigilance, it is a thermometer that someone reads at open and at close, or a monitor that alarms. Both are cheap next to a single freezer load, and both turn a discovery into a warning.
What to Do Before We Arrive
- Move the product if the box is above 0°F and rising. Frozen inventory in a walk in is worth more than anything on this page.
- Photograph where the ice is. It is the most useful single piece of information you can give us, and it is free.
- Look at the condenser coil. If you cannot see through the fins, that alone can be the whole problem.
- Check whether the drain is frozen and whether there is ice building on the floor beneath the evaporator.
- Note whether the condensing unit runs continuously or cycles, and whether the door seals and self closes.
- Have the data plate ready, usually inside the door frame or on the condensing unit.
Repair or Replace
Repair, on the equipment side, without much argument. A walk in freezer is a five figure installation and the components inside it are all serviceable, so even the largest invoice we have issued on one is a fraction of replacement.
The exception is the box rather than the machinery: waterlogged insulation or a failed floor. Those are construction problems, they cannot be fixed by refrigeration work, and a freezer suffers them sooner than a cooler does because the temperature difference driving moisture into the panels is larger.
The Maintenance That Actually Pays
- Clean the condenser coil quarterly, monthly in a kitchen. The highest value item on this page and it needs no technician.
- Check the door gasket and the frame heater monthly. A door that has started sticking is telling you the heater is failing before the door damages itself.
- Watch the drain. Ice forming beneath the evaporator is a drain problem announcing itself early and cheaply.
- Read a thermometer daily. A freezer drifting from minus 10 to zero over a week is the cheap moment to call.
- Do not prop the door open during deliveries. Every minute of open door in a freezer is stored as ice on the evaporator.
One scheduling note specific to freezers. Unlike a cooler, a freezer cannot usefully be given a temporary measure to hold it through service, because there is no partial answer between frozen and not frozen. If the box cannot be brought back down on the first visit, the right move is moving the product rather than waiting, and we will say so plainly instead of booking a second visit and hoping.
Where We Work
Our walk in work sits mainly in Georgia and Florida, with jobs also completed in North Carolina, South Carolina and Pennsylvania. Ask when you call rather than assuming, since commercial refrigeration dispatch is narrower than our residential coverage.
Where These Numbers Come From
- Source. Our own completed service records. Walk in freezer jobs number eight, of which four completed and three involved parts.
- The honest caveat. Three repairs is not a sample. We print the three invoices individually and refuse to average them, and we point you at the 54 job commercial freezer figure and the 129 job commercial refrigeration figure instead.
- What the figures include. Parts, labor and the service call as one total.
- Scope. Self contained boxes only. Not remote racks, not blast freezers, not structural work on the box itself.

Common Questions
Do you repair walk in freezers?
Yes, self contained boxes where the condensing unit sits on or through the panel rather than on a remote rack. We do not service remote rack systems, blast freezers, or structural work on the box such as panel replacement and floors.
How much does walk in freezer repair cost?
The commercial service call is $150 and comes off the repair when you approve it. Our completed walk in freezer repairs with parts were $486, $1,810 and $1,880. That is three jobs, too few for a median, so plan against our commercial freezer figure of $518 across 54 jobs.
Why does a walk in freezer need defrost when a cooler does not?
Because it runs below freezing, so moisture entering the box becomes ice and stays ice rather than draining away. The defrost cycle warms the evaporator on a timer to melt that frost, and a heated drain carries the meltwater out before it refreezes. Most freezer specific faults come back to that circuit.
My freezer is iced up. What does that tell you?
Where the ice sits matters. Packed on the evaporator points at defrost. Building on the floor beneath it points at a frozen drain line. On the ceiling and walls near the door points at the door letting humid air in. Frost on the outside of the panels points at wet insulation, which is the one problem here that is not a repair.
The door has frozen shut. Is that serious?
It is a fault with a short fuse. Freezer doors have a heated frame that stops them freezing into the opening, and when it fails the damage usually comes next from someone pulling the door open hard. Dealing with the heater costs less than the hinges, gasket and frame that forced openings will cost.
Why is the service call $150 rather than $99?
A walk in cannot be pulled out and worked on a bench. Diagnosis covers the box, the condensing unit and the electrical supply, and the visit is scheduled around a business that is trading. It still comes off the repair when you approve it.
When is a walk in freezer finished?
When the box fails rather than the machinery: insulation that has taken on water so the panels no longer insulate, or a failed floor. A freezer reaches that sooner than a cooler because the temperature difference driving moisture into the panels is larger. No refrigeration repair addresses it, and we would rather tell you than fit a component.
Walk in freezer icing up?
Photograph where the ice is before you call. On a freezer that single picture narrows the job more than anything else. The $150 commercial service call comes off the repair when you approve it.
