The evaporator fan sits inside, behind the rear panel, and pulls air across the cold coil and around the compartment. When it stops, the coil still gets cold but the cold goes nowhere. Why the Fan Gets Blamed on the Compressor
This is the practical reason the page exists. A freezer that is not holding temperature while the compressor runs continuously looks, to anyone standing in front of it, like a freezer whose sealed system is failing. That is the diagnosis people arrive at online, and it is the one that makes them price a new appliance.
But the same picture is produced by a stopped evaporator fan, and the mechanism is simple. Cold is made at the coil and distributed by air. Stop the air and the coil gets colder and colder while the compartment gets warmer, so the thermostat never reaches setpoint and never lets the compressor rest. Everything runs, nothing cools, and the system is working perfectly.
The distinguishing test takes a moment and needs no tools. Open the freezer and listen with the door switch held in, or watch whether the interior light hides a fan you can hear. A frost free freezer should have audible airflow. Silence inside a running freezer points at the fan. Then look at the rear interior panel: an evaporator solid with ice behind it, when the room is not humid and the door seals, means air stopped moving before the ice formed.

What Actually Kills These Motors
Ice, and it is usually first. The most common failure we open is not a worn motor but a blade jammed or struck by frost that formed because a defrost fault or a door seal let humidity in. Bearings, on age. These motors run more or less continuously for a decade. Dust and pet hair, on the condenser side. The condenser fan lives in the dirtiest air in the house, at floor level. Coils and blades pack with dust, the motor works harder against the load and against its own heat, and fails early. This is the one genuinely preventable failure here.
Control faults that look like fan faults. On units with a variable speed or electronically commutated fan, the motor is commanded by the board. A fan that does not run is not always a fan that has failed, and diagnosing that difference is the reason a meter beats a guess.
The Ice Question Decides Whether It Comes Back
Fitting a new fan into a compartment full of ice fixes the machine for a few weeks. The technician who does that has not finished the job.
If the evaporator was iced, something let moisture in or stopped it being removed, and there are only a few candidates: a defrost heater or timer that is no longer running its cycle, a door seal that no longer seals, or a drain that has frozen so meltwater refreezes on the coil instead of leaving. Each of those has its own repair, and any of them will kill the new fan the same way it killed the last one.

What You Can Check Before Calling
- Listen for airflow with the freezer running. A frost free unit should be audibly moving air. Silence points at the evaporator fan.

- Feel the back or underneath. Very hot with no airflow suggests the condenser fan rather than the freezer side.

Chest Freezers Are a Different Machine
Everything above assumes a frost free upright, which is what most of these calls are. A traditional chest freezer usually has no evaporator fan at all: it cools by convection off coils built into the walls, and cold air, being heavy, stays in the box every time you open the lid.
That has two consequences worth knowing. A chest freezer that stops cooling cannot have a fan fault, so the diagnosis moves straight to the thermostat, the sealed system or the lid seal, and the odds of the expensive answer are higher. And a chest freezer needs manual defrosting precisely because there is no fan and no defrost cycle, so ice on the walls is normal maintenance rather than a fault report.
