Repair or Replace a Samsung Refrigerator?
Where These Numbers Come From
- Source. Completed Bozmanfix jobs, January 2023 to October 2026: 69,165 jobs across Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.
- Brand shares. Taken from 18,670 repairs that could be matched to a brand, published in full on what breaks by brand. A share is the part of one brand’s refrigerator calls where a component was the reason for the visit.
- Prices. Full tickets across all refrigerator brands: part, labor and the service call together. The median comes first, then the middle half of jobs (the 25th to 75th percentile), then the number of repairs.
- What the shares are not. They describe the mix of failures inside the brand. They are not a reliability ranking and they do not compare how often refrigerators of different brands break.
The Short Answer for Samsung Owners
When a Samsung refrigerator stops working properly, the question most owners ask is whether this is the start of a long run of expensive problems. Our records answer it with the mix of work we actually do on these units. Three numbers from 1,498 Samsung refrigerator repairs tell most of the story.
Ice maker: 21.7% of Samsung refrigerator calls. This is the most common reason we are called to a Samsung refrigerator, and it is one of the ordinary, mid priced repairs.
Compressor: 3.1% of Samsung refrigerator calls. This is the expensive repair, the one where replacing the refrigerator deserves a comparison, and it is uncommon.
Evaporator fan: 1.4% of Samsung refrigerator calls. A cooling fault that looks serious and is priced with the ordinary repairs.
Put together, the likeliest outcome when a Samsung refrigerator fails is a repair from the ordinary group, priced in the same band as almost every other refrigerator repair we do. Replacement becomes a real question in a small minority of cases, and nearly all of them involve the compressor.

Full tickets across all refrigerator brands, including Samsung: part, labor and the service call together. Completed Bozmanfix jobs, January 2023 to October 2026. We publish one price per repair for the whole company rather than a separate Samsung figure, because the labor and the service call, not the badge, decide most of the ticket. Every component on every appliance is priced on appliance repair cost by part.
The table makes the decision visible. The two ice maker repairs a Samsung most often needs sit at $438 and $451, a little above the overall refrigerator median of $395 and well below the compressor. Every other ordinary repair lands between $376 and $533. The compressor stands alone at $846, with the top quarter of those jobs above $1,237.
Why the Ice Maker Leads on Samsung
On many Samsung French door and four door refrigerators, the ice maker does not sit in the freezer. It sits in a separate insulated compartment in the fresh food door, cooled by air carried from the freezer side and kept below freezing by its own fan. That design frees up freezer space and puts the dispenser at a convenient height, and it also gives the ice maker more ways to go wrong than a simple tray in a freezer drawer.
The ice maker is already the most complicated assembly in any refrigerator, combining a motor, a heater, a water valve and a sensing arm or sensor inside a freezing space. In a door compartment it also depends on a steady supply of cold air and a good seal around the compartment. When that seal leaks or the airflow drops, frost and ice build up inside the compartment, the ice maker jams or stops, and the dispenser can leak water onto the floor.
That explains why the share is high, and it also explains why the repair is usually contained. The failed part is the ice maker module, the ice maker fan, or the seal and airflow around them, not the cooling system of the refrigerator as a whole. Samsung specific symptoms and the fixes we make are covered on Samsung refrigerator ice maker problems, and ice maker pricing in general is on ice maker repair cost.
Samsung is not alone here. Whirlpool sends 21.1% of its refrigerator calls to the ice maker, almost the same as Samsung, while GE sits at 11.3% and Frigidaire at 12.4%. These shares are the mix of work inside each brand, so they say where a Samsung owner’s next repair is likely to come from, not that the refrigerator is worse than another brand’s.
The Compressor Question on a Samsung
The compressor is the one Samsung refrigerator repair where replacement deserves a real comparison. It means opening the sealed system, replacing the pump at its centre, clearing and recharging the refrigerant, and confirming the cabinet pulls down to temperature. Across all brands that runs a median of $846 at Bozmanfix, with the middle half between $482 and $1,237, across 72 completed jobs.
On Samsung refrigerators it was the reason for the visit on 3.1% of calls, in the same range as GE at 2.6%, Frigidaire at 2.9% and Whirlpool at 2.3%. LG is the brand that stands apart on this measure, at 9.8% of 809 LG refrigerator repairs, which relates to its linear compressor design. Samsung refrigerators use an inverter compressor rather than a linear one, so the LG pattern does not carry over.
If you are unsure whether the compressor is the problem at all, the signs that point to it, and the cheaper faults that mimic it, are on signs of a bad refrigerator compressor.
Samsung Cooling Complaints That Are Not the Compressor
A Samsung that is warm in the fresh food section or slow to recover after the doors open is easy to blame on the compressor. Several cheaper faults produce the same symptom, and the diagnostic visit exists to rule them out first.
Evaporator fan. 1.4% of Samsung refrigerator calls. Many Samsung models use separate evaporators and fans for the fresh food and freezer sections, so one side can warm while the other stays cold. Fan motor replacements run a median of $423 across 397 jobs.
Frost on the evaporator. If the defrost system fails, ice builds up on the evaporator and blocks airflow. Cooling fades over days and the fan may scrape against the ice. Defrost heater or timer repairs run a median of $396 across 110 jobs.
A temperature sensor. A sensor that misreads the cabinet tells the system to rest when it should run. Median $376 across 138 jobs.
The control board. The board runs the compressor, fans and defrost cycle, so a fault there can look like several other failures at once. Median $533 across 78 jobs.
Samsung refrigerators often display a code when something in this list goes wrong, and the code narrows the search without replacing the test. What the codes mean is on Samsung refrigerator error codes, and the cooling side in full is on Samsung refrigerator not cooling.
Three Checks Before You Book
These are safe for any owner and occasionally solve the problem without a visit.
Power and the display. Confirm the display is lit, the interior lights work and the breaker has not tripped.
The settings. Samsung control panels can switch the ice maker off, lock the controls or, on some models, put the refrigerator into a showroom mode that runs the lights and display without cooling. Check the ice maker setting and the temperature setting before anything else.
The water filter. A clogged or overdue filter slows the water reaching the ice maker and the dispenser, which produces small, hollow or missing ice. If the filter is past its replacement date, change it before booking.
If that does not fix it, the part needs testing by a technician.
Deciding: Repair or Replace Your Samsung
Once the technician has named the fault, the decision on a Samsung follows the same logic as any refrigerator, with two Samsung specific points added.
- Ice maker, fan, defrost, sensor, valve, gasket or board. Repair, in nearly every case. These are ordinary repairs between $376 and $533, and they leave the sealed system untouched.
- Compressor inside the compressor warranty. Repair, after confirming the cover with Samsung. The part may cost you nothing.
- Compressor outside warranty. Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new unit, and weigh the age and condition of the refrigerator. Typical service life is on how long refrigerators last.
- Repeat ice maker trouble. If the ice maker has been replaced before and the compartment keeps icing up, ask the technician to check the compartment seal and airflow, not only the module. Fixing the cause is what stops the same repair coming back.
The general rules across every appliance are in the repair or replace guide.
What the Price Includes
Every price on this page covers the visit, the diagnosis, the part and the labor to fit it. The diagnostic visit is $99 and is applied to the repair when you approve it, so you pay for the visit on its own only if you decide not to go ahead. Every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. Households with several appliances can add Priority Membership at $179 a year.
