Three things to look at before the visit

2. The fill tube. The small plastic tube that delivers water into the ice mould freezes solid when the freezer runs colder than it should or when a previous fill partly missed. Look at the back left of the ice compartment: a plug of clear ice in a tube the diameter of a pencil is the whole problem. A hairdryer on low will clear it, and if it returns within a week the freezer temperature is the real fault.
3. The shutoff arm or sensor. Every ice maker has a way of knowing the bin is full – a wire arm on older units, an infrared beam on newer ones. A bag of frozen food leaning on the arm, or a frosted-over sensor eye, tells the machine to stop making ice, and it obeys. Clear the bin, wipe the sensor window, wait an hour.

Water pooling under the crisper or ice on the freezer floor. The defrost drain is blocked, which is often cleared at the visit. Ignored, it eventually reaches the compartment below and looks like a much more serious leak.
Ice tastes or smells wrong. Almost always the filter, occasionally an open food container in the freezer. Ice absorbs odors readily, which is why old ice in a bin that never empties tastes stale even when the machine is working perfectly.
Ice maker runs constantly and overfills. The shutoff arm or the fill sensor has failed. It is a genuine repair, and worth booking promptly because water finds its way out of the bin and onto the freezer floor.
Loud grinding from the freezer when ice drops. The auger motor or the ejector gears. This is the one ice maker fault that is unmistakably mechanical and cannot be checked from outside the cabinet.

A filter costs a fraction of a service call and is the single cheapest piece of appliance maintenance there is.
The second is emptying the bin. Ice that sits for months fuses into a solid block, absorbs whatever is in the freezer, and puts load on the auger motor every time the dispenser runs. If your household does not get through much ice, tip the bin out every few weeks and let the machine refill it. That single habit prevents the grinding-auger failure that is otherwise the most mechanical repair on the list.
