There are two completely different ways a dryer can decide to stop, and most people have no idea which one theirs is using.
Timed dry is the old way: you choose sixty minutes, the machine runs for sixty minutes, and whether your clothes are dry at the end is your problem. Simple, predictable, and wasteful.
Automatic or sensor dry is what almost every modern machine defaults to, and it works by actually measuring the clothes. Inside the drum — usually on the lint filter housing or on the front bulkhead just inside the door — there are two small metal strips a couple of millimetres apart.
As damp laundry tumbles across them, the water in the fabric bridges the gap and completes a circuit. The machine measures how easily current flows: wet fabric conducts, dry fabric does not. When the conductivity has fallen below a threshold for long enough, the cycle ends.
It is elegant, it saves energy, and it has one significant weakness. Anything that coats those two strips also insulates them — and then the machine measures the coating instead of your laundry.

The Free Test That Proves It
You do not have to guess. There is a test that separates a sensor problem from a heating problem definitively, using a setting your dryer already has.
Run the same load on Timed Dry instead of Auto. Set it to sixty minutes and let it run.
If the load comes out dry, the heating side is fine and the fault is the sensor. The machine can produce heat and move air perfectly well — it just gets the wrong answer when it tries to decide whether to stop. Wipe the bars, and if that does not resolve it the sensor or its wiring needs attention, which is still a long way short of an element.
If the load is still damp after a full sixty minutes on Timed Dry, the fault is real and it is in the heating and airflow group. Now the element at $362, the thermal fuse at $332, the cycling thermostat at $350 and the air path are all genuine candidates, and the visit is worth booking.
That single test, which costs one cycle of electricity, tells us more than any description of the symptom can. It is worth doing before you call, and telling us the result when you do.
Two more things that produce early stops and are not faults at all. A very small load — one or two items — may simply not touch the sensor bars often enough for the machine to get a reliable reading, so it ends the cycle early.
And a mixed load with heavy towels among light shirts will finish when the average is dry, which leaves the towels damp. Neither of those is a machine problem, and both are worth ruling out before booking.
The opposite failure exists too and is worth knowing. If a sensor or its wiring shorts, the machine reads permanently wet and runs every cycle to its maximum time. The Other Sensor: Heat Instead of Moisture
There is a second sensor in most modern dryers and it does a different job, which is worth knowing because the two get confused.
Older machines control temperature with a mechanical thermostat: a bimetal disc that opens a contact at a set temperature and closes again when it cools. It is simple and it either works or it does not. That is the $350 line on the table.
Many newer machines use a thermistor instead — a component whose electrical resistance changes smoothly with temperature, so the control can read an actual number rather than an on-or-off signal. That allows finer control, and it introduces a failure mode a mechanical thermostat does not have: drift. What the Technician Checks First on a Dryer
First whether the machine can heat at all, which is a Timed Dry run and a temperature reading rather than a conversation. This immediately separates the sensor group from the heating group.
Second the moisture sensor bars — inspected, cleaned and then tested wet and dry, because a film that reads as failure comes off with a solvent and a cloth.
Third the electrical supply. The breaker gets reset firmly and the cord and terminal block at the lower back are inspected for scorching or a loosened joint, because an electric dryer runs on two legs of 240 volts and if one drops the drum turns while the heat never comes on.
Fourth the air path, as far as the machine has one. The lint screen gets the water test, the housing below it gets looked into, and on a vented machine the duct comes off and airflow is confirmed at the outlet and at the wall cap. On a ventless or combination machine the condensing circuit and its drain take that place.

Six Checks the Technician Runs First on an Dryer
- Run the same load on Timed Dry for sixty minutes. Dry at the end means the fault is the sensor, not the heat. Still damp means the heating and airflow group. One cycle, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell us.
- Wipe the moisture sensor bars. Two small metal strips a couple of millimetres apart, usually on the lint filter housing or the front bulkhead just inside the door. Rubbing alcohol on a cloth, thirty seconds. Softener film insulates them and makes the machine stop early.
- Hold the lint screen under a running tap. Water should fall straight through. If it pools or beads, softener residue is blocking the mesh and strangling airflow on a screen that looks perfectly clean. Scrub with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
- Try a normal-sized, similar load. One or two items may not touch the sensor bars often enough for a reliable reading, and a mix of heavy towels with light shirts finishes when the average is dry. Neither is a fault.
- Reset the double breaker firmly, then look behind the machine. If one leg of the 240 volts drops, the drum turns while the heat never comes on. Then check where the cord enters the cabinet for discolouration or scorching — if you find any, stop using the machine.
- On a vented machine, watch the wall cap while the dryer runs. The flap should swing open with warm, moist air behind it and real force. Barely moving is a blockage that looks exactly like a broken dryer from inside.
