A $120 cleaning and a $750 defrost are the same fault six months apart ONE FAULT, TWO PRICES

The two most instructive invoices in our Decatur file are a Frigidaire condenser cleaning at $120 in November 2025 and an evaporator defrost at $750 in May 2026. Both are the same story: heat that cannot leave the cabinet. A freezer works by moving heat from inside to a condenser coil outside, then melting off the frost that forms on the inner evaporator during a timed defrost cycle.

Fur the condenser with dust and pet hair and the compressor runs longer and longer; let the defrost cycle fail and the evaporator ices into a solid block until the fan is buried and nothing circulates. Caught early, the fix is a vacuum, a brush and an hour: $120.

Caught late, the cabinet has to be emptied, the rear panel removed and the coil thawed under control before any part can even be tested, which is where $750 comes from. This is the one appliance in the house where a free ten-minute habit changes the bill by a factor of six.

Vacuum the condenser twice a year, especially on a chest freezer against a basement wall, and if you see a frost sheet forming on the back wall, book it while it is still a defrost heater at $364 and not an evaporator excavation.

The City of Decatur has more than eighty restaurants and pubs, more than forty-five of them in the Square district, and five Michelin-recognised kitchens, Chai Pani, The Deer and the Dove, Kimball House, The White Bull and Fawn, all within a ten-minute walk of the Square.

That density shows up directly in our ice and freezer file, which is unlike any other geography we publish. An ice maker boils nothing, and DeKalb breaks mains 8,800 HOUSEHOLDS

DeKalb County Watershed Management supplies every address on this page from one source, the Chattahoochee River, through one treatment plant, and it is replacing an ageing distribution network with 596 miles of small-diameter main still on the list.

What that means in practice arrived on 14 January 2025, when a cast-iron pipe installed in 1941 failed on Clairmont Road near Dresden Drive: nearly 8,800 households and about 20,000 residents lost or risked losing supply, bottled water went out from five fire stations, and residents were told to be ready to boil water for consumption.

Since 27 July 2026 the same programme has been inside Decatur, replacing more than 5,600 linear feet of iron main on Williamsburg Drive over roughly seven months. Here is the part that matters to an ice maker. Boiling protects drinking water; an ice maker boils nothing. It takes the supply through a filter and freezes it exactly as it arrives.

So during any advisory, switch the ice maker off at the arm or the panel, empty the bin, leave the dispenser alone, and once the notice lifts throw away the first two or three batches.

Do the same after main work in your street even without an advisory, because the first water through a repaired line carries whatever the pipe let go of, and the narrowest opening it will meet in your house is the fill valve at $428 or the filter at $440. Restarting the bin is the best free diagnostic there is TWO OR THREE BATCHES

Most people call us about an ice maker with the bin half full of old ice, and that hides the only measurement that matters: how fast the machine actually makes ice now. A household ice maker in good order produces a batch of eight to ten cubes every ninety minutes to two hours, which is roughly two to three pounds a day.

So when you book, empty the bin completely, note the time, and look again in two hours. If there is one thin batch or none, the fault is real and it is worth the visit. If there are eight solid cubes, the machine is working and the problem is consumption or a door left ajar.

That single test also separates the two commonest faults in the whole category. Cubes that are small, hollow or crescent-shaped mean the machine is not getting enough water: filter, fill tube or inlet valve, $393 to $440.

Cubes that are full size but fused into a block in the bin mean they are melting and refreezing, which is a door seal at $570 or a defrost fault, not a water problem.

The night DeKalb led the state in outages, and what it means for a full freezer 48 HOURS

DeKalb loses power more than any county in Georgia. On Monday 7 August 2023, when storms crossed the state, more than 160,000 customers lost supply and DeKalb led every county with 58,685 outages, ahead of Fulton at 17,315, with gusts reported to 80 mph and the National Weather Service measuring 70 mph in Atlanta.

For a chest or upright freezer holding a month of food, that is not an inconvenience, it is a clock. USDA guidance is that a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours if the door stays shut, and a half-full one for about 24.

So keep it shut, do not open it to check, and if the outage runs long, moving the contents into a neighbour’s working freezer beats opening yours to inspect it. What we see afterwards is the second wave: freezers that restarted with a jolt and lost a control board at $494, and compressors that came back on a hot start and did not survive it.

The second freezer in a Georgia garage, and why summer kills it 1950 TO 1970

DeKalb County went from 136,395 people in 1950 to 415,387 in 1970, and the single-storey houses from that boom, which are most of 30032, 30034 and 30035, very often have a chest freezer in the garage or a spare upright in the basement. Our file has them: a Frigidaire chest freezer in 30034, a Whirlpool freezer in the same ZIP code, a GE freezer in 30033.

A freezer is designed to reject its heat into a room at ordinary indoor temperature, and an uninsulated Georgia garage in July is not that. The compressor runs almost continuously, the condenser sits in air that is already hot, and a machine with years left in it fails in one season.

If you keep a garage or carport freezer, four things genuinely extend its life and none of them cost anything: leave a hand’s width of clearance behind and above it, vacuum the condenser coils twice a year, keep it at least two-thirds full because frozen mass holds temperature far better than air, and do not run it on the coldest setting in August, which only makes the compressor work harder for no benefit.
