If the freezer is still hard-frozen and only the fridge is warm, stop thinking about the compressor and the coil. That pattern is about air movement inside the cabinet, and it has three usual causes.

Frost on the evaporator. Both compartments are cooled by one coil in the freezer, with a fan pushing some of that cold air across to the fridge section. When the defrost circuit fails, frost builds on the coil until the fan cannot move air. The freezer stays cold sitting next to a block of ice; the fridge, which depends on air arriving, warms within hours.

A stalled evaporator fan. Same effect, different cause. No air is being pushed, so nothing reaches the fresh food compartment. The tell is silence: with the freezer door held open on the door switch you should hear that fan running.

A damper or duct problem. The flap that controls how much cold air the fridge receives can stick closed, and a box pressed against the vent does exactly the same thing for free. Check the vents before assuming a part.

Water in the crisper drawers belongs to this same family. It is meltwater from a defrost cycle that could not drain, refreezing at the bottom of the freezer and eventually building towards the fan. Finding water there is early warning of the icing problem rather than a separate fault, and it is much cheaper to act on at that stage.

What You Can Check in Half an Hour

Get real numbers. A thermometer on a middle fridge shelf and another in the freezer, left a couple of hours. You want 37°F to 40°F and 0°F. Do not trust the display — a failed sensor will show 38°F while the shelf sits at 50°F, and that gap is itself a diagnosis.
Vacuum the condenser coil. On many Frigidaire models, take off the bottom front grille and work the crevice tool through the coil and around the fan. If yours is a rear-coil design, pull the unit out and do the same at the back. This is the highest-value thing an owner can do.
Check clearance and ambient. A hand’s width behind and above, nothing blocking the front grille, and no oven or direct sun heating the cabinet. In a hot garage, expect a refrigerator to struggle in a way it never does indoors.

Clear the vents inside. Nothing pressed against the air outlets in either compartment, and no over-packing of the freezer, which stops circulation as effectively as ice.
Unplug for five minutes, then plug back in. After a power cut a board can come back without restarting cooling, and a reset is sometimes the whole fix. Do not use repeated resets to nurse a failing fridge — it hides what is happening.

If the coil is clean, the seals are good, the vents are clear and the temperature is still wrong after 24 hours, the fault is in the fans, the defrost circuit, a sensor or the sealed system. What a Technician Actually Checks

Both compartments measured, then compared with what the control reports. A disagreement of more than a few degrees convicts a sensor before anything is dismantled.

Start components tested before the compressor is condemned. A relay or capacitor produces identical symptoms at a fraction of the cost, and no honest diagnosis skips this.
Sealed system pressures only if everything else tests good. A compressor running quietly while nothing gets cold usually means lost refrigerant, and that decision needs numbers.
