Self-clean is where ovens die THE CYCLE THAT KILLS

If the good element also fails to heat in that position, the fault is the receptacle or the switch. Receptacles arc and burn when the connection loosens, so if you see scorching around the socket, stop using that burner rather than pushing the element back in.

Radiant electric under glass. A coil sits beneath ceramic glass, glows red, and heats the glass which heats the pan. Faults are the element or the infinite switch behind it, and the usual symptoms are one zone that stays cold or one that runs full power regardless of the setting — the latter being the switch failing closed.

The glass here is a cover rather than a structural assembly, so a crack is less serious than on induction, but it still needs replacing because a crack lets spills reach live elements underneath.

What the Technician Checks First

On a gas oven that will not light, the first measurement is the current the igniter draws, not the gas supply. A weak igniter glows convincingly while drawing too little to open the safety valve, so metering separates a $352 part from a much more expensive conversation about the valve.

On an electric oven that will not heat, the elements are metered cold and then watched under power, because a failed bake element is often visually perfect while one with a visible blister may still test fine.

On an oven that heats but not accurately, an independent thermometer goes in and the cavity is watched through two full cycles, because normal swing and a genuine offset look identical to anyone judging by results rather than by measurement.

On an over-the-range microwave, the first question is which half has failed. Ventilation faults go to the filters, the damper, the switch and then the blower motor. Cooking faults go to the door interlocks first, because a microwave that runs without heating is very often an interlock rather than anything on the high-voltage side.
