Two Machines, One Door: Making Ice and Delivering It
A through-the-door ice system is really two mechanisms working in sequence, and almost every wrong diagnosis in this category comes from treating them as one. Our Sunrise file happens to contain a job from each, which makes it a useful place to explain the difference.
The making half lives in the freezer. A valve at the back of the appliance opens for a few seconds and sends water up a narrow fill tube into a plastic mould.
Freezer air solidifies it over roughly ninety minutes. A small motor then warms the mould slightly and rotates an ejector arm that drops the cubes into the bin below. A bail arm or an optical beam senses when the bin is full and pauses everything.
The delivering half lives in the bin and the door. At the bottom of the bin sits an auger — a large corkscrew driven by its own motor. When you press the dispenser lever, that motor turns the auger, which sweeps stored cubes forward into a chute through the door.
On machines offering crushed ice there is also a solenoid that swings a small blade assembly into the path so the cubes are broken on the way out.
Those halves fail independently and produce completely different complaints.
