The Lint the Screen Never Caught
Everybody knows to clean the lint screen. Almost nobody has been told the thing that makes this page necessary: the screen was never designed to catch all of it.
A lint screen is a compromise. It has to be coarse enough to let a large volume of air through without choking the machine, which means the fine lint — the short fibres, the dust, the particles you can barely see — passes straight through by design.
On top of that, the screen sits in a slot with a frame around it, and any gap at the edges of that frame lets lint bypass the mesh altogether. The result is that a meaningful share of every load ends up somewhere other than in your hand when you pull the screen out.
There are four places it goes, and only one of them is the duct everybody thinks about.
One: the screen housing itself. Pull the screen out and shine a light down into the slot. There is very often a felt-like mat of lint packed down there, below where the screen sits, in the throat that feeds the blower.
This one you can deal with yourself with a vacuum crevice tool or a purpose-made brush, and on a machine that has never had it done the improvement in drying time can be immediate.
Two: the blower housing and the wheel. Everything the screen misses is carried by the airflow straight into the fan that creates that airflow. Somebody has the vent cleaned, the vent is genuinely clear, and the dryer still takes two cycles — because the restriction was never in the duct. It was in the screen throat, or the blower housing, or both. A clean duct and a clean lint screen are not the same thing as a clean dryer.
There is a fifth restriction that is not lint at all and is the most common of the lot. Fabric softener sheets leave a waxy film on the screen mesh that you cannot see and cannot feel. It glazes the holes and strangles airflow on a screen that looks spotless.

So a restriction anywhere along that path, whether in the screen slot, the blower housing, the duct or the wall cap, produces the same end result: heat builds up inside the drum instead of leaving with the air.
What follows is a short sequence that people experience as three separate problems. Loads start taking longer, and nobody calls anybody. Then the machine begins cutting out partway, because the cycling thermostat is interrupting heat it cannot get rid of — doing exactly its job.

- Reset the double breaker firmly, then look behind the machine. If one leg of the 240 volts drops, the drum turns while the heat never comes on. Then check where the cord enters the cabinet for discolouration or scorching — if you find any, stop using the machine.
- Pull the machine out and look at the duct connector. In a shallow installation the flexible connector is frequently crushed flat or kinked behind the appliance, which is a partial blockage nobody ever sees because the machine is never pulled out again. Straightening it costs nothing.
- Go outside and watch the wall cap while the dryer runs. The flap should swing open with warm, moist air behind it and real force. Painted shut after a repaint, blocked by a nest, or grown over by planting is a complete blockage that looks exactly like a broken dryer from inside.
