A Built-In Refrigerator Is Cabinetry, Not a Box

This is the distinction that decides most refrigerator decisions in Miami, and it almost never gets explained before a quote. A free-standing refrigerator is furniture: it stands on the floor, rolls out on wheels, plugs into a socket and can be wheeled away and replaced in an afternoon.

A built-in or panel-ready refrigerator is part of the joinery. It is fixed into a designed opening, screwed to the cabinet carcass at the top, finished flush with the doors around it, and very often wearing custom panels that were made for that kitchen and for no other.

Four practical consequences follow, and each of them changes something about your repair.

One: it has no behind. A free-standing machine sheds the heat it removes through a coil at the back or under the base, into whatever air is behind it. A built-in has no gap behind it at all — it is sealed into a cabinet — so the entire condenser airflow path runs through a designed grille, usually at the top of the unit and occasionally at the toe-kick.

Every price on this page falls on one side or the other of a single boundary, and knowing which side yours is on is the whole of the useful information.

Every refrigerator contains a sealed system: a compressor, a condenser coil, a metering device, an evaporator coil and a filter drier, with a charge of refrigerant circulating in a loop that was brazed shut at the factory.

Working inside that loop means recovering the refrigerant rather than releasing it, brazing, replacing the drier because it has been exposed to air, evacuating under vacuum to pull out every trace of moisture, and recharging by weight rather than by pressure.

It is a different trade on a different timescale from everything else in appliance repair. That is the $956 line, and on a built-in that has to come out of a cabinet to be reached it runs $1,300 to $1,700.

Outside that loop sits everything else, and it is where the large majority of refrigerator calls land: fans at $422, thermostats and sensors at $386, defrost heaters and timers at $395, water valves at $401, door gaskets at $484, start relays at $389, control boards at $564. Two rules that save real money. First, a refrigerant recharge on its own is not a repair. A sealed loop does not consume refrigerant — if the charge is low, it leaked, and it will leak again. Adding gas without locating and fixing the leak buys weeks, not years. A proper job finds the leak, repairs it, replaces the filter drier, evacuates under vacuum and recharges by weight.

The Fault That Looks Like Two Faults

On a conventional refrigerator, the most common single complaint in our entire book is a fresh-food compartment going warm while the freezer stays cold. It reads as a contradiction and it is not one.

On almost every modern refrigerator there is only one place where cold is made — an evaporator coil behind the rear wall of the freezer — and a fan blows that cold air up into the fridge compartment through a duct. The fridge has no cooling of its own. It is downstream.

So when the fridge goes warm and the freezer does not, the cold is still being made and simply is not arriving. Three things stop it arriving, in order of how often we find them.

The evaporator fan has failed, at a $422 median. The freezer stays cold by conduction from the coil right behind it. The fridge, which needed the fan, does not. Often audible: open the freezer door and hold the switch in, and either the fan runs or the compartment is silent.

The defrost circuit has stopped working, at a $395 median. That coil frosts up in normal operation and a heater clears it on a timer. When the heater, timer or thermostat quits, frost keeps building until it becomes a solid block over the coil and around the fan.

Now the fan cannot move air, or cannot turn at all. The signature is a sheet of ice on the rear freezer wall and a machine that improves for a day after being switched off and then goes wrong again.

The air damper between the compartments is stuck, which is the cheapest of the three and the least common.

None of those is a compressor, and this is exactly the symptom people fear as one.

Which is why it is worth doing one free thing before booking anything: empty the freezer, switch the machine off entirely for a full day with the doors open, then run it again. If it works properly and then fails again over the following week, you have found a defrost fault rather than a sealed-system fault, and you have told us so before we arrive.

What the Technician Checks First on a Refrigerator

First the temperatures, measured rather than read. A thermometer in a glass of water in the fridge and between the packs in the freezer, because a display reports what the machine believes and a sensor drifting is itself one of the faults on the list.

Second whether cold is being made at all. That separates the whole sealed-system group from everything else in a couple of minutes, and it is done before any part is named.

Third the airflow path. The evaporator fan, the rear panel of the freezer for frost, the duct into the fridge and the damper.   • Test the seal with a banknote, all the way round both doors. Close it in the gasket and pull: it should drag. Anywhere it slides out freely is letting humid air in continuously.   • Listen at the freezer with the door switch held in. If the evaporator fan is silent while the compressor runs, you have almost certainly found the fault, and it is a $422 part rather than anything dramatic.
  • Photograph the model plate. Inside the fresh-food compartment on a side wall, or behind the lower grille. On built-in and premium equipment this matters more than anywhere else, because parts are model-specific and it decides whether the component arrives with the technician.
